Is Robert Frank’s Late Work Worth Viewing? - The New York Times

MoMA’s centenary exhibition of the photographer revered for a groundbreaking book makes the case for what came after — but was often left in the shade. It’s this late work — if such a rubric can be applied to the six decades of movie, video and photo production that preceded his death at 94 in 2019 — that is the focus of “Life Dances On: Robert Frank in Dialogue,” opening Sunday at the Museum of Modern Art. Curated by Lucy Gallun, the exhibition marks the centenary of Frank’s birth and is his first solo show at MoMA.Robert Frank never recovered from the success of “The Americans.” On its publication in the United States in 1959, the book was initially excoriated as un-American, particularly in the photography magazines, for its sour, disillusioned take on life in this country. But in a slow burn, Frank’s willful violation of the conventional rules of photography was understood to serve the purpose of personal expression, and his dissection of national alienation and social divides was deemed prophetic. After his road trip for “The Americans,” Frank shot from a moving Fifth Avenue bus, capturing cross-sections of New York life. It was a transitional image introducing movement into still photography before he committed himself to filmmaking.Credit...Robert Frank/The June Leaf and Robert Frank Foundation, via Museum of Modern Art, NY

NEW YORK (AP) — Tucked within the expansive Native American halls of the American Museum of Natural History is a diminutive wooden doll that holds a sacred place among the tribes whose territories once included Manhattan. For more than six months now, the ceremonial Ohtas, or Doll Being, has been hidden from view after the museum and others nationally took dramatic steps to board up or paper over exhibits in response to new federal rules requiring institutions to return sacred or culturally significant items to tribes — or at least to obtain consent to display or study them. The doll, also called Nahneetis, is just one of some 1,800 items museum officials say they’re reviewing as they work to comply with the requirements while also eyeing a broader overhaul of the more than half-century-old exhibits.Lance Gumbs, vice chairman of the Shinnecock Indian Nation, a federally recognized tribe in New York’s Hamptons, said he worries about the loss of representation of local tribes in public institutions, with exhibit closures likely stretching into years. The museum also plans to open a small exhibit in the fall incorporating Native American voices and explaining the history of the closed halls, why changes are being made and what the future holds, he said.

A photography exhibit about the West Bank ignites tensions in Newton | WBUR News

Protesters effectively shut down a reception for the exhibit, sparking questions about free speech and the role of public libraries in civic discourse. Schiel said the exhibit had been approved last July by the independent panel of Newton artists and art professors, which selects the exhibits shown in the library’s gallery and main hall throughout the year. The Cambridge artist has been active in leftist causes since the Vietnam War, and has been documenting Palestinian life in the West Bank, Gaza and Israel since 2003. His process for the photographs in the exhibit, he explained, was to photograph and interview Palestinian refugees in the West Bank and then try to find the sites in Israel where their families lived before they were displaced. Some protesters took issue with the title of the exhibit: “The Ongoing & Relentless Nakba: The Palestinian Catastrophe of 1948 to Today.” “Nakba” means “catastrophe” in Arabic, and it refers to the mass displacement of Palestinians that occurred when Israel declared independence in 1948.
